Saving Face

For a long time, foundation (and finding the perfect foundation routine) has been the absolute bane of my existence. I live in hot and humid Florida, and have oily skin. Good luck keeping anything on my face, huh!

After a few years, I finally found a routine that works (for me), and I love sharing about the products that I've found that help keep my skin looking matte and smooth all day.

There's two products that I swear by, and are my must haves whenever I put my face on.

The first one is what I use as a primer.
Monistat Chafing Powder-Gel.
Yea... bear with me for a bit, because I get a lot of strange looks when I admit to using this.

I've used a lot of face primers, and this, by far, has been the best thing I've used as a primer.
While it may seem strange, it works.

It has often been compared to Smashbox Photo Finish Primer.
One of the main active ingredients in both products is Dimethicone. This is a type of silicone that is used in many makeup and hair products. It acts as a filler, and until it's washed off, it fills and smooth's lines and pores.

It creates a better canvas, and my makeup goes on even and even more smooth than without it.

It makes my skin feel so smooth, and look smoother (even without makeup on) after it dries.

The next is my absolute MUST for makeup. My setting spray. I've tried some higher end brands, but the $3 e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set is my absolute favorite.
It gets rid of that powdery look that I often get with my makeup. It also keeps my makeup from transferring to my clothes, and other peoples (lets face it: I'm a hugger! Nothing more embarrassing then giving a hug to someone and having half your face wind up on their shoulder or clothes).

It's always the little things that count with makeup, I believe.
And for me, it's these little invisible products that can make or break my days when I use makeup and want to look my absolute best!

I love hearing of other little unheard, or under appreciated products...so tell me!

What are your favorite products that you use to keep your makeup looking flawless?

I'm back

It's been a while since I've posted anything, and am trying to get back into the swing of it. Hopefully I can stick with it this time.
So much has changed over the course of time.

Wet n Wild CoverAll Cream Foundatiom

Whenever my foundation starts to  run low, I start getting antsy to try a new one. So while I was at CVS, I saw Wet n Wild had come out with a foundation and powder combo. I hadn't heard of it before, though with it being less then $10 for both items, I figured why not. The colour selection is very limited (only consisting of 7 foundation shades and 8 powder shades). I grabbed the foundation in 816 Fair/light and the powder in 822B Fair/Light.

The back of the bottle says this foundation is made for all day wear, provides medium to full coverage, is lightweight with a satin matte finish, and has "Visibright" complex that helps to reduce winkles.  The powder says pretty much the same thing (sans the coverage and finish part) and had a "radiant, weightless finish".

I've been using it daily for the past 2 weeks now, and I'm in LOVE with this foundation.

What I like...

I was a little iffy at first, seeing that it was a cream foundation and having flashbacks of wearing that thick mask on stage (if you've ever been in theater, you know what I'm about). I was surprised (and happy) that this foundation doesn't have that thickness that I've come to associate with cream foundations, and provides a semi-matte finish (a blessing for my oily and shiny face). Having normal/oily combination skin, keeping that oil under control is very important for me. While powers (and this ones powder is no different) always helps, but what I like most about this product is that it contains silica (which is used as an absorbing agent in makeup, along with other benefits).

This product, for me, is so buildable. I judge coverage of foundation by my freckles. If I can still see them pretty easily, I don't feel that I have full coverage. Sometimes I want that, and sometimes I really just want to cover up some redness in my face (and am not super concerned with "looking like a Barbie", as one young girl called me one day...). A quick, thin layer of this can cover up the redness, and then another layer can provide that wonderful, heavy coverage WITHOUT feeling heavy or looking cakey.

A problem I've always had with foundation is that, throughout the day, the oil in my face starts to break up the foundation on my nose and chin, making it look blotchy (and me feeling very self conscious). So far, I haven't had any sort of problem with that. And when they say all-day wear, they weren't kidding. I haven't any problems with it melting off during the day, separating, or wearing/rubbing off. Even after 8 hours, I notice it still looks fresh (and even after all day wear, I only have to brush a bit of powder over my t-zone to refresh it).

What I Don't Like...
I've noticed that this product, on my, oxidizes a bit. It's not enough to be a complete turn off though, because it only turns it a shade or two darker.

The powder is very soft and tends to get everywhere when I pull my brush away (though perhaps I am just too heavy-handed?).

The smell of it is not one that I terribly care for (though again, not enough of a factor to turn me away from it at all). It disappears rather quickly, though I can only think of acrylic paint when I put it on my face.

The packaging is something I'm having a love/hate relationship with. I love the squeeze tube, though the dispensing hole is quite large and if I'm not paying attention, I tend to squeeze out more then I need (fixable by just sucking it back into the tube though).

I'm confused by if the product has any sort of SPF in it (the website say it has SPF 15, though the tube says nothing about it at all).

So, taking out all that fluff, here is...

What I like:
- Doesn't feel too thick/heavy
-Contains silica
- Semi-matte finish
-Does not get cakey/separate/oily
- The price of it

What I don't:
-Oxidizes
-Soft powder
- Scent
-Packaging
- SPF???

Will I buy again?: Absolutely!

This was a re-creation of a look by xBeingNEONx (sadly though I can't find the video where she showed her look :( I think she might have taken it down? Makeup Tip #4: Mascara

When applying mascara to your upper lashes, apply a coat of mascara to the tops of your lashes (the side that usually catches fall out from eyeshadows) by brushing them downwards and then apply a coat to the bottom (the "front" of your eye lashes)  side of your upper lashes.

Makeup tip #3: Cream Makeup

When using cream makeup, set it with a powder. It'll help lessen the chances of it creasing.

Makeup Tip #2: Foundation

Give your foundation time to dry before setting it with face powder

My Eyebrows

A topic that seems to come up often in conversations (concerning makeup) are my eyebrows, and I often get a lot of questions from people about it.

Why?
The main reason I shave my eyebrows is because I don't like the natural shape of them. My eyebrows grow very low, thick, and straight. People ask why don't I just wait for them to grow out and shape them? More hair grows on the bottom part of my eyebrow then on the top, so I can't achieve the shape I want as easily as I want. My hair is also naturally blonde, and I dye it black, and though you can really only tell up close, I just don't really like the lighter hairs against the dark brow powder and pencil. I don't have the patience to wait for the hair to grow, and I know there are some products that claim to help with eyebrow hair growth, but I don't want to spend the money on it. Plus, I don't like the pain of tweezing and I don't wanna get my eyebrows waxed. And I've tried threading and I can do it, but it's still uncomfortable.

Up keep?
Up keep is pretty simple. Every few days (depending on the growth), I take a small electric hair trimmer and run it across my brows to trim down the hair. Then, using my regular razor, I shave off the "tail" part of my eyebrows and then a bit from the front part. I leave a bit of hair near the start of my eyebrows just to use as a guide for where to start. I shaved off my entire eyebrow once, and I just noticed I had a bit more trouble drawing them on without some guide as to where to stop.

How do I draw in my eyebrows?
The way I personally prefer to draw on my eyebrows is to draw the basic shape (that I want that day) with a brown power (because the powder is so much more forgiving then the pencil),  then I take a black eyebrow pencil and continue to fill in the rest and make the shape much more defined. I then set the powder with either a darker brown or black shadow.

The products I'm using currently for my eyebrows is Too Faced: Brow Envy (Brunette eyebrow power) and NXY Auto Eyebrow Pencil (EP08 Black)

I don't plan on growing back my eyebrows out and keeping with my natural shape anytime soon. It can be a time consuming process to draw them on for me (because I have not so great eyesight and am not very good at getting things symmetrical). Though after doing it over and over again and developing a process, it gets much easier and takes up much less time. There are other drawbacks to doing this (for me, personally) I don't feel comfortable leaving my house without drawing in my eyebrows, so unless I've already drawn them in earlier in the day, I have to stop and pencil them in. Also, I can't really touch my eyebrow/forehead area much anymore, and if something happens when I'm out in public and if my eyebrows gets wiped off, then I'm kinda S.O.L. (the only makeup I really ever carry with me is lip gloss or my lipstick, if I wearing it that day. I don't carry around my brow pencil...which I should probably start doing! haha Basically, I don't really carry around much makeup in my bag :p). But despite how much of a pain it can be sometimes, I still prefer to do my eyebrows this way. Some days are bad and some days are good. When they're bad, I figure that they're not gettin' any better and I might as well just deal with them. But on days when they're good, whoa...it's gonna be a great day.

Where have I been??

So I haven't really stopped doing makeup and whatnot. I actually lost my battery for my camera, and am not fully prepared to bring myself to spend about $150 to replace it, so I've been trying to find a new one. So I'm not dead, I promise. I've been having some people asking me if I still do makeup, and that's the only reason why I haven't been posting many pictures or posts on here, but hopefully that's going to change soon. I also have so much going on with college and whatnot (and while I was thinking of going to become an art history major, I'm thinking I might switch over to business and maybe open up something...? A makeup shop, perhaps? haha). But there's loads I wanna talk about and have learned a few new fun things recently, so hopefully I'll be back up and running soon! :)♥

LOTD: Naturally Glamorous

This is one of my absolute favorite dark eye sort of makeup to wear! It's starting to become one of my go-to look.

I used the Revlon CustomEyes palette in "Naturally Glamorous" for most of this, but I added a matte brown eyeshadow from the tarte for TrueBlood kit.

Face:
Moisturized face with Clean&Clear Dual Action Moisturizer
Primed with Rimmel Fix&Perfect Primer 02
Revlon Colorstay makeup for combination/oily skin in 110 Ivory
Boiing Industrial Strength Concealer: 01
Set with Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder: Translucent 070-24
tarte for TrueBlood eyeshadow in "Dusk" was used as a cheek and nose contour
NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in 720A Sunny used on cheeks
Revlon SkinLights in 02 Bare Lights used as highlight

Eyes:
Primed with tatre for TrueBlood lifted natural eye primer with Firmitol
All 5 colours in the Revlon "Naturally Glamorous" palette (colours weren't given names, just numbers) used:
1. On entire lid
4) Outer part of the lid
2) In crease and blended upwards
5) Used to deepen the crease
3) Inner eye highlight and brow highlight
tarte for TrueBlood colour "Werewolf" was used in the crease to darken it and blended upwards
Eyes lined with NYC Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in 931 Black, e.l.f. cream liner in black and topped with #5 from Revlon "Naturally Glamorous" palette
Upper lashline lined with elf cream liner in black
tarte's "Lights, Camera, Lashes" mascara was used with a coat of Ready to Wear Lash Extension on upper lashes and "Lights Camera Lashes" mascara used on lower lashes
Eyebrows drawn in with NYC Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in 931 Black and set with NYX ES01 Black

Lips:
A light pink/nude lipgloss by Malibu Glitz (no idea what the colour is called or what it's numbers is). It's a strange "gloss" that has a very thick consistency (I could honestly use this as concealer, it's so thick...in fact, I have...o^_^o) and it dries matte.

Not Your Average Waitress

For c-mas, I got the tarte for True Blood palette and I absolutely love it (especially the mascara...oh my goodness, I can't even deal with how amazing it is! I have to get a new, full-size tube soon). So far, the only thing I'm not too crazy about is the eyeliner. It's like a gel liner in a tube, and it's super soft and breaks easily, so I have to use a brush. But it's a super creamy, dark black, so I can live with it :)

The palette comes with a little booklet that has 4 different looks and how to do them (it also says that they are "exclusive looks created by True Bloods award-winning lead makeup artist Brigitte Ellis)

None of the looks are really complex or complicated, but that's something I really love about them. They're simple and easy to do, yet are still very pretty and flattering.

The looks (in order of the picture above) are called "Not Your Average Waitress", "Luminous Fairy", "Vampy Vixen", and "Vamp Glam".

Today I did the look called "Not Your Average Waitress" for work. I love it and its been what I've been wearing to work almost every day now.

Ready To Wear Lash Extension Review

I just wanted to talk for a spell about a new product I got the other night. It's called "Ready To Wear Lash Extension".

I first used this a few weeks back at my sister-in-laws and wanted it right away.

Home Shopping Network provides this description of the product:

"False eyelashes in a bottle! Enjoy the ease and convenience of Ready To Wear's Lash Extension. This beauty treatment in black delivers longer, fuller, thicker and healthier-looking lashes in seconds. You receive a .25 oz. bottle.
Ready To Wear Lash Extension Features:
  • Dry cellulose fibers give you the longest lashes possible without actually applying fake eyelashes.
  • Adds volume and helps strengthen lashes.
  • Simply apply in between coats of mascara.
  • Best used in combination with the Ready To Wear Mascara (sold separately).
Product Note: Ready To Wear Lash Extension is not a mascara. It is a formula of dry fibers that should never be applied to lashes alone. Lash Extension should always be applied by "sandwiching" the product between coats of mascara. The first coat of mascara gives the Lash Extension a coating to adhere to, while the second coat of mascara seals the Lash Extension to your lashes.

Yearn for the look of long, full lashes but hate fussing with traditional fake eyelashes? Ready To Wear Lash Extension gives you false eyelashes in a bottle! Simply brush on some of these .25 oz. dry, black cellulose fibers between coats of your mascara. In mere seconds, your eyes will sport longer, fuller, thicker, healthier-looking lashes.

Ready To Wear Lash Extension Features:

  • Fibers give you the appearance of the longest lashes possible without actually applying false eyelashes.
  • Easy to remove with your regular eye makeup remover.
  • Fast-acting beauty treatment.
  • Just apply in between coats of mascara.
  • Should a few fibers fall onto the skin, just brush away lightly with a powder brush or cotton swab. The fibers are not wet, so they will not stick or ruin your makeup.
  • For best results, this product should be used in combination with Ready To Wear Mascara, sold separately.
  • Made in USA.
Directions for Use:
  • Step 1: Start one eye at a time, applying mascara to top right eyelashes first.
  • Step 2: While mascara is still wet, apply Lash Extension.
  • Step 3: Follow with a second coat of mascara to seal Lash Extension to your lashes.
  • Step 4: Repeat process on bottom lashes of your right eye.
  • Step 5: Repeat this application process on your left eye.

Lash Extension contains: Cellulose Acetate, Panthenol."

Pros:
-My eyelashes are very light (I naturally have blonde hair), and both differ in length. I feel like this product makes them both look more even (and my uneven eyelashes [reasons why would be a whole blog post in itself! haha] make me feel terribly self-conscious). I think the ad is very true in its promise to thicker looking lashes. I wouldn't go as far as to say it gives the "false lash" effect, but it does make a huge improvement.

-I mention this in the cons, but there is some fall out with this. But what I really like is how it's not a big deal if it falls on your cheeks after applying it because it doesn't leave any sort of black streaks. So clean up is NOT a big deal at all. I've noticed though that if I apply it this with a light hand, there's not much fall out (if any).

-Clean up is super easy. I just use regular eye makeup remover, or whatever I'm cleaning my makeup off with, and it comes right off. I remember having a mini heart attack when I first used it because when I was cleaning off my mascara, I saw the little fibers and thought it was my eye lashes. Nope! It's only the small fibers :)

Cons:
-There can be a bit of fall out with this. Although that's not a HUGE issue for me (since it is dry and can be easily wiped away without leaving any sort of streaks or marks), it's only a pain because I wear contacts and it can fall into my eye and get on them. If it gets on top of my contact, it leaves little black lines from the fibers. But if it gets under it, it can really irritate my eye (I noticed after I removed my contacts, little fibers rested at the bottom of my contact case). But like I said, applying with a light hand can help with fall out.
-If too much product is put on, it can make the lashes look clumpy.

I say that this product is really worth a try. For me, it is a bit pricey (twenty or so dollars, I don't remember exactly how much I paid for it), but for me, it was worth it. I think it's a great addition to any mascara routine. It's a simple and quick step to longer, thicker looking lashes.
